San Quentin News is the only inmate-run publication in the United States that report on rehabilitative efforts with the goal of increasing public safety supporting social justice.
When San Quentin News decided that the publication needed a new platform to bring forward the issues that they are writing about, a collaboration with TLM Works seemed like a natural fit for both of us.
The San Quentin News and TLM Works are both located in the facility, and as such, it opened the door for shoulder-to-shoulder teamwork.
We began by learning their goals and learning about how they would like to be represented on the web.
Being a publication, it was essential to understand the scope of their content. Currently, San Quentin News has over 3,500 articles available on their new website.
It was also equally important to provide an opportunity to support and teach the team behind the San Quentin News, about digital publishing, SEO, mobile device considerations, and the internet in general.
These men are powering a wonderful public service, and it is a unique opportunity to empower them as new citizens of a digital age. These skills, learning, and experience will grow and follow each of them as their career evolves.
The SanQuentinNews.com website was created entirely by inmate developers at San Quentin, supporting inmate writers, editors, and publisher at San Quentin. Keeping it the only inmate-run and produced publication in the United States.
